How do I edit a scene from full-length vid?

I have a full-length AVI movie and I want to edit/extract one scene and junk the remainder.

Can anyone please advise how I do so? :confused:

Can I use iMovie or are there any free downloads?

Any tutorials or guides out there - maybe on YouTube?
